Are You Working ON Your Business or IN Your Business?

Up until recently, I wasn’t clear on the difference between “working on” my business and “working in” my business.  Nor did I understand why that was important, especially for service-based businesses. It’s important to know so you can plan your daily business activities more effectively.

During your business day you need to spend time working ON your business as well as IN your business.  Let me explain.

Working ON your business is doing the activities that bring in clients.  You have to allot a certain amount of time for marketing and promoting activities. They might include making phone calls, writing a blog or article, preparing your newsletter, sending out emails, attending networking events, content creation, and ongoing training—anything that supports the growth of your business.

You should be scheduling at least one or two days a week for these kinds of activities, and when you’re just starting out this is where you will spend most of your time.  This is the time to plan your week/month/year, meet with your team, and do your energy management activities, such as journaling, brainstorming, writing out intentions, goals, ideas, or shifting your mood/beliefs, etc.

Aligning Your Energy to Match Your Clients


One of the biggest challenges of life coaches is the enrollment conversation. How can you enroll clients into your coaching programs when you are struggling with the fear of being pushy and feeling that marketing is not what you wanted to be doing in your business?

You can’t—plain and simple.  Why? Because of your energy behind those thoughts and beliefs.  A belief is just a pattern of thoughts that you believe out of habit and familiarity.  You may have thoughts such as:
•    It’s hard to find clients
•    People can’t afford my services
•    I’m not a salesperson
•    What if I can’t help clients get the results I promise
•    I don’t have enough experience

These are the kinds of thoughts that establish beliefs that can sabotage all your marketing efforts.  And they have an energy or vibration that is non-supportive. When it comes to an enrollment conversation, your potential client will pick up on that energy or vibration and not want to enroll with you.  Your doubts about yourself become their doubts about how much you can really help them.

Your fears get in the way of your actions and then you are left wondering how you’re ever going to make it or fill your practice.

But it doesn’t have to be that way.  Here is a tool you can use that will help you plan out your enrollment conversations so that your energy is in alignment with how you want to serve that potential client.

Energy Alignment Tool

Step 1
Ask yourself: “What don’t I like about the buying process when I buy something?”
You may come up with things like, feeling manipulated, getting talked into spending more than you planned, feeling pressured to make a quick decision, being taken advantage of, paying for overpriced goods or services, etc.

You want to get it all down on paper so that you can see all the details of that kind of energy. Once you get clear on the specific elements you don’t like or want to experience in a selling situation, then you know what not to do in your sales conversations.

Step 2
Now ask yourself: “What do I like about the buying process when I buy something?” You may come up with things like, I like feeling understood, acknowledged, appreciated, interested in, a VIP, am getting a great deal, taken care of, etc.

Once you are clear on what you want to experience you can be more open to creating a similar structured selling experience for your ideal clients.  After all, most of your ideal clients are just like you and therefore, they will want just what you want.

Step 3
So how can you make your potential client feel how you want to feel in a sales conversation?  What can you do that is in alignment with your desires as well as your potential client’s desires?  How can you make them feel more comfortable, appreciated, like a VIP?

Step 4
Channel your doubts and your fears into inspired action. Ask yourself, what can I do right now to support my dire need?  If you need more enrollment conversations, find a way to get more leads.  If you are worried about paying the bills this month, send out an email with a special or limited offer.

Getting clear on what you want your clients to experience and moving from doubt and fear into action, will keep your vibration high and your mindset in alignment with your goals.  AND it will convert marketing from an unpleasant task into an enjoyable experience!

Conceited I’m not!

Recently I had a conversation with another coach and she said, “I don’t want to sound conceited, but I really am good at what I do.”  It reminded me of the fact that so many coaches, consultants, and solopreneurs are afraid to toot their own horn, because they’re afraid of appearing conceited.  I know that was true for me.  The sad consequence is that these talented people aren’t visible to the people they can truly serve.

The truth is most of us were brought up with the idea that it wasn’t polite to brag about how great we were and so many of our talents went unacknowledged.  There are several problems with this.

•    First of all, when you hide your gifts, they don’t get used and that’s a real shame.

•    Secondly, when no one knows about your talents, you don’t get appreciated for who you are and the gifts that you brought to this world.

•    Thirdly, you tend to get lost in the crowd.  No one is going to see or remember you if you don’t have something significant to share.

How do you overcome this dilemma?  There is a fine line between bragging and authentically marketing your brilliances.

Attend a Live Event to Boost Your Business Success

Last week I discovered the enormous value of attending a live event.  I went to a live workshop in New York City that was part of a coaching program I am taking.  Just being in a room of so many like-minded individuals was phenomenal.  And added to that was the amazing energy of our coach, who radiated such enthusiasm, joy, and love to everyone in the room.

Surround yourself with success
When you are striving to attain a thriving business, one of the most important parts of your potential success is the people you surround yourself with.  It’s almost impossible to be successful if you are hanging out with people who don’t support your aspirations.  Your friends and family can be subtle obstacles to your success if they don’t believe in your ability to manifest your dreams.  As much as possible you need to surround yourself with supportive people.

That’s exactly why going to a live event is so important as you grow your business.  You are interacting with people who, like yourself, have overcome obstacles just to get to the event.  These are the kind of people who have what it takes to be successful and it’s a great comfort as well as an inspiration to be in their company.

Narrow Your Niche to Become a Client Magnet

All entrepreneurs want to know how to attract more clients.  There are a myriad of ecourses, coaching programs, and Internet services that address this issue.  But here’s the real secret. We are undergoing a major paradigm shift in marketing. You want more clients because you want to make more money. Money flows to you through other people.

Who those people are, and the problem you help them solve is the magic behind getting a flood of new clients coming to you so you market less, your programs and courses fill faster, and you can make more sales of your products and services, doing what you love most.

And that’s why you will want to become a client magnet.  So you can make more money, serve more people and enjoy more of life.

When I started my coaching business, I picked my niche based on who I enjoyed working with and the fact that I could solve their problems.  But after a while I discovered that my favorite clients were not in the niche I had chosen.  So I had to go back over all the material I had gathered on selecting niches and pick a new one.

Using Fearless Marketing

No matter what your product is, as a business owner, you need to market.  For many solopreneurs, especially healers, coaches, and consultants, marketing is the least liked part of the business activities. Part of the problem is thinking of marketing as “sales.”  It immediately brings to mind all of the uncomfortable sales experiences you have had when you were the customer.  So it feels uncomfortable to be the salesperson too. But it doesn’t have to be that way. I have discovered a small business marketing solution to this problem.

There is a way to engage in marketing and be the real you and feel comfortable about it. I call it “fearless marketing.”

Fearless Marketing is about being your authentic self and claiming who you are.
It’s about putting yourself out there as you are and not making any excuses for who you are.  It’s about boldly claiming what you bring to the marketplace and having the confidence that you can make a difference in people’s lives.

It’s about replacing that made-up fear of rejection with a commitment to being a success. And it’s delivering your expertise in such a way as to empower and inspire everyone you interact with.

When You Say You Can’t Afford it

When a potential client arranges to find out more about my coaching programs and then says they can’t afford it, I know they need me.  The fact is they can’t afford not to hire me.  Why?  Because as long as you have to say “I can’t afford it” you’re putting off changing that situation.  And you’re only going to change that situation by deciding to do something about it.

How long can you afford to wait to get some help and get out of that frustrating position of not having the money to do the things you really want to do?  Life is not meant to be sacrificed, but to be LIVED.

There was a time when I thought that the way to get into a better financial situation was to sacrifice, be frugal, and not spend any money until I made the money.  And there is something to be said for curbing spending habits and operating on a cash-only basis.  But when it comes to your business, you can’t do it alone and you can’t do it without investing some money into your business; whether that be a website, classes to learn new skills, or some life and/or business coaching.

Once I discovered how much easier it was to build a business with someone helping me, I decided to always be investing some of my profits back into the business, because it made a big difference. Having that extra support, especially when you’re just starting out, shortens the learning curve.

When you’re stuck in the ”I can’t afford it” mode, nothing will change unless you do something about it.  But you don’t know what to do and that’s why you’re stuck.  Getting some fresh ideas, support, and guidance is the best way to jumpstart the engine of your business, and kick it out of the idle gear.  It’s just like trying to turn over a car engine—you need to give it some “juice” first.

There’s also a mindset behind this financial condition of saying no to those who want to help you because you think you can’t afford it.  All of the experts agree that an entrepreneur cannot become successful by him or herself.  Almost everyone who has built up a million-dollar business will admit that they hired people to help them get where they wanted to go and many of them will tell you that they hired their first coach BEFORE they could really afford it!

What does that tell you about their mindset?  It tells you that they believed in themselves and they trusted the Universe to work things out so they could have what they so deeply desired.  That’s coming from an abundant mindset.  Not being able to afford it is coming from a mindset of lack.

So the first step in overcoming your financial difficulties is to change your mindset from one of lack to one of abundance.  There are so many options for the person who makes the decision to take action.

When you decide to invest in yourself, you will find that opportunities come your way to support your decision and you find a way to make it happen.

So if you’re someone who has been waiting for the right timing, the right coach, the right price, understand that you are just procrastinating.  Make the decision to get some help and shorten that learning curve to success.

The true value of changing your life, making major transformations, and attaining business success is worth much more than the money you spend to achieve all of it.  And it starts with an abundance mindset.

3 Essential Time Management Tools

One thing that the New Year brings on is the desire to get organized, or reorganized, as the case may be.  Managing your business depends a great deal on time management.  If you are not managing your time efficiently you will tend to have lack of focus, scattered energy, projects never get completed, lack of follow-through, and not honoring commitments. Highly successful entrepreneurs have tools to organize their time, their activities, and their thoughts.

Here’s my short list of valuable tools to help you get organized and have more efficient time management.

1) Managing your appointments: & Google Calendar
The first thing you need to organize your time around is appointments.  Before I started using TimeTrade, I was going back and forth with emails 3 to 6 times trying to find a time that worked for both parties.  It was a colossal waste of time.  For a mere $56 a year you can save an enormous amount of time and frustration and you will also get a handy reminder for all your appointments.  It works in conjunction with several online calendars, including Google Calendar.

Google Calendar also gives you a reminder when an appointment is coming up.  You can set how long before the appointment you want to be reminded and choose between email or a pop-up (which won’t go away until you click on it).

2) Managing your activities:
When I started my business, there weren’t any type of planners that suited me, so I made my own.  It was organized via monthly, weekly, and daily.  But I had to print a new one out every year and that got rather tedious.  The closest planner I have found that is a viable substitute was Planner Pad.  This planner is organized so you can sort your to do list by categories, plan out your activities for the week, and set your appointment dates—all in one view.

This is a great way to not only plan out your activities in a coherent manner, but also organize your thoughts, ideas, and reminders.  It’s harder for things to slip through the cracks because you are planning more broadly and you can see the big picture at a glance.

3) Managing your business mindset: ESC 30-Day Plan
One of the best tools I discovered in my coach’s training and that I teach to my clients is called a 30-Day-Plan.  The idea behind it is that you plan out what you need to accomplish in the next 30 days and then get clear on the energy around those activities necessary to complete the plan.

For example, you would set your 30-day goal such as…
•    How many clients would you need for one month?
•    How many products would you need to sell for one month?
•    How many sales conversations would you need to have?
•    How much networking would you need to do?

Once you are clear about these kinds of specifics, you chunk it down into weekly and daily actions. Then you take a look at your own energy around those goals and what else may get in the way of achieving them, including any beliefs you may have about not getting them. Clients find that planning out 30 days at a time is less overwhelming and an easy way to get more organized.  And using the 30-Day-Plan’s inner and outer approach is a more efficient way of management.

These 3 tools will absolutely help you become more organized and will use your time more efficiently.  Better time management and more organization equals more productivity. And, more productivity equals more profit.
